Introduction
An unprecedented number of African American artists worked on the Harlem Hospital murals project.

Charles Alston
Prominent in the Harlem arts community, Alston became the first African American supervisor on the Federal Art Project and worked in a variety of media throughout his career.

Alfred Crimi
Sicilian-born Crimi grew up in East Harlem and studied fresco painting in Rome. His other work includes frescos at the Post Office Department Building as well as 12 solo exhibitions during his career.

Vertis Hayes
Hayes studied with Jean Charlot and assisted on a WPA mural before joining the Harlem Hospital project. He went on to teach at colleges in Tennessee and California.

Georgette Seabrooke
An art student at Cooper Union, Seabrooke was the youngest master artist on the project. She continued to pursue her art and became an educator and art therapist.
